How decimal hours work

One hour has 60 minutes, so a decimal fraction of an hour is multiplied by 60. For example, 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes, which makes 7.75 hours equal to 7 hours 45 minutes.

Common decimal-hour conversions

Why is 8 hours 30 minutes equal to 8.5 hours?

Thirty minutes is half of 60 minutes, so it is 0.5 of an hour. Add that to 8 hours to get 8.5.

Is 7 hours 45 minutes the same as 7.45 hours?

No. Forty-five minutes is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 decimal hours.

Does this calculator round time for payroll?

No. It performs unit conversion only. If your payroll process rounds punches or totals, apply the policy required by your employer, agreement or applicable rules separately.
